Sam Varner is een verkenner bij het leger en op middelbare leeftijd. Sam wil zijn rust zoeken op een boerderij in New-Mexico, die hij recent heeft gekocht. Zijn laatste opdracht is het terugbrengen van een groep ontsnapte Apachen, vooral bestaande uit vrouwen en kinderen, naar het indianenreservaat. Tussen hen zit de op 11-jarige leeftijd ontvoerde blanke vrouw Sarah en haar halfbloed Indiaanse zoontje. Beiden mogen met het leger meereizen, maar Sarah wil snel verder reizen naar familie in Columbus. Sam begelijdt beiden en onderweg besluit hij Sarah en haar zoontje mee te nemen naar zijn ranch, wanneer hij vaststeld dat het bloeddorstige Apachenopperhoofd Salvaje hen achtervolgt.
