Jan Thomas is vrijgelaten uit de gevangenis waar hij acht jaar heeft gezeten voor kindermoord. Hij heeft deze moord altijd ontkend en is vastberaden na zijn vrijlating iets van zijn leven te maken. Hij is een getalenteerd organist en wordt aangenomen bij een kerk in Oslo. Door zijn talent en zachtaardig karakter wordt hij al snel gewaardeerd door zijn omgeving. Zo weet hij ook de harten van pastoor Anna en haar zoontje Jens te veroveren. Hoewel Jan zijn verleden geheim heeft weten houden, komt de waarheid boven water wanneer lerares Agnes met haar klas de kerk komt bezoeken. Ze herkent Jan als de man die veroordeeld werd voor de moord op haar zoon.
